Student Spotlight: Beckett and His Award-Winning Cat Science Project
Every so often, we meet a student whose curiosity, creativity, and joy for learning remind us exactly why online school can be such a powerful place for young minds to grow.
This month, we’re thrilled to highlight Beckett, a thoughtful third grade Kansas Virtual Academy (KSVA) student whose love for animals, especially cats, led him to create an award-winning science fair project.
Beckett recently participated in a local Science Fair hosted by Exploration Place in Wichita, Kansas. His project, cleverly titled “If I Fit, I Sit,” explored a question many cat owners have wondered: Will a cat sit in any box, whether it’s 2D or 3D? With careful observations, data collection, and a detailed graph, Beckett earned 1st place in the Animal Science category and 3rd place overall in his division. Even more impressive, this wasn’t a school sponsored event. Beckett chose to participate simply because he loves learning and loves cats.
His family currently has six cats, Sally, Fred, Ted, Danger, Seamus, and Baby Girl, and they became the stars of his experiment. Beckett observed how each cat interacted with different types of boxes, creating a project that was both educational and fun. One memorable moment came when Seamus tried squeezing into a tiny box and needed a little help getting back out.

When reflecting on how online learning helped him prepare for the science fair, Beckett shared that the flexibility built into his KSVA schedule made a huge difference. He could complete his lessons, take meaningful breaks, and still have time to work on his project without feeling rushed. His mom shared that flexibility, safety, and a strong curriculum were major reasons their family chose Kansas Virtual Academy. They wanted structure and community while still having the freedom to learn in a way that fits their family’s needs.
The flexible schedule also allows Beckett to explore many interests outside the classroom. He enjoys cooking breakfast, especially pancakes and fried eggs, along with sports, singing, theatre, and reading. One of his favorite books is The Wild Robot Series, and he says English Language Arts is his favorite subject. His family appreciates that KSVA gives him the opportunity to pursue creative interests while continuing to build a strong academic foundation.
Beckett also dreams big. He hopes to become an archaeologist, a chef, and a game maker someday. His mom shared how proud she was to see Beckett’s hard work recognized at the science fair, especially knowing how much effort he put into observing, recording, and presenting his findings.
For families considering online learning, Beckett’s mom encourages them to approach it with an open mind. She highlights the benefits of flexibility, safety, community, and the opportunity to be more involved in a child’s learning journey. KSVA, she says, has given their family peace of mind and a learning environment where Beckett can truly thrive.
As for Beckett, he summed up his experience simply: online school gave him the time and space to explore something he loves, and that freedom helped them shine.
